Precision lapping.

Lapping takes flatness and finish past what grinding can reach, producing surfaces that seal on contact without a gasket to help them.

01 / The Process

Lapping works the part against a precision lap with a fine abrasive between them, removing material a few millionths at a time. We lap outside diameters, inside diameters, and flat faces, holding straightness and roundness to 20 millionths of an inch with flatness and finish beyond grinding tolerances.

It is usually the final step inside a larger job rather than a standalone process: the last operation on a sealing face, a valve-to-seat pair, or a hydraulic component where two surfaces must make full, even contact.

02 / Why It Matters

Some joints seal on finish alone, with no gasket to help.

Metal-to-metal seals, precision mating faces, and lapped valve pairs depend on complete surface contact. At that level a few light bands of error is the difference between a joint that holds pressure and one that weeps, and lapping is the process that gets there.

Verified before it ships

Lapped surfaces are checked under an optical flat, with flatness read in light bands and finish verified against the drawing requirement.
