01 / The Process
Honing drives abrasive stones through the bore in a controlled pattern, correcting geometry while cutting the angled crosshatch that retains oil on the cylinder wall. Bore size is matched to the measured pistons for the build, not to a generic chart, so piston clearance lands exactly where the ring and piston manufacturers want it.
For modern low-tension ring packages we plateau hone, a second finishing pass that knocks the peaks off the initial crosshatch. The rings see a pre-broken-in surface, seat quickly, and seal with less friction. The same process finishes hydraulic and pneumatic cylinder bores, where surface finish decides seal life.
02 / Why It Matters
Ring seal starts with the crosshatch.
The hone finish controls how rings seat, how much oil the wall retains, and how quickly an engine stops consuming oil after break-in. A bore can be perfectly sized and still fail its rings if the finish is wrong, which is why honing is specified by finish and angle, not just diameter.
